Poultry Manure Transport Grants

You’ve got this!

Maryland’s Manure Transport Program can help you cover the cost of hauling poultry manure away from areas with high soil phosphorus levels.

  • We pay up to $28/ton to truck manure to qualifying fields with acceptable soil phosphorus levels or alternative use projects that can use the product safely.
  • Farmers/businesses receiving the manure or registered manure brokers may apply for these grants.
  • You have two options for transport: FastTrack and Standard. (See page 2)

Here’s the scoop…

  • Our transport grants make it easy to switch from commercial fertilizer to poultry manure.
  • Poultry manure delivers all the essential nutrients for strong, healthy crops.
  • It adds organic matter to your soil for increased water and nutrient retention.
  • Poultry manure makes an ideal fertilizer for corn, hay, and organic certified field crops.
  • We offer cost-share grants for satellite storage facilities.
  • Check out our tax breaks for qualifying conservation equipment.

FastTrack transport option

With our FastTrack grants, you can transport the manure straight away and apply for reimbursement afterward. Here’s how it works:

  • Use this grant option to transport poultry manure to receiving fields with a Maryland Soil Phosphorus Fertility Index Value (P-FIV) less than 101.
  • You pay for delivery upfront and we’ll reimburse you for eligible costs—up to $28 per ton.
  • Before you select this option, make sure you meet the FastTrack grant requirements outlined in the application.
  • If your schedule allows, apply for this grant beforehand, and we will send you an approval letter within two weeks.
  • Find everything you need on our website—from a list of manure brokers and haulers to application and claim forms. Go to mda.maryland.gov/manure

Standard transport option

Our standard option to transport poultry manure is for receiving farms that do not meet our FastTrack requirements. This option requires approval before you transport the manure.

  • The standard option provides up to $28 per ton for poultry manure transport.
  • Apply for this grant through your local soil conservation district.
  • Registered manure brokers should apply directly to the Maryland Department of Agriculture.
  • Submit relevant maps and soil tests from your current nutrient management plan with your application. You’ll also need:
    • Nitrogen-based nutrient recommendations for fields with a P-FIV of 100 or less, or
    • Phosphorus-based nutrient recommendations for fields with a P-FIV between 101 and 150.
  • Farm fields with a P-FIV exceeding 150 are not eligible to participate in this program.

Poultry manure transport rules

  • Sending farms should be located in Maryland, raising broiler chickens for Delmarva poultry companies. If you have a different source of poultry manure, use the livestock manure application on our website to apply for our grants.
  • Poultry manure must be transported over 7 miles from the sending farm, applied to crops as a nutrient source, or sent to an approved alternative-use business.
  • Either the receiving farmer or broker may apply for reimbursement. You must make this determination beforehand.
  • Please note MDA does not oversee financial transactions between buyers and sellers.
